The way The Passage conceived and played their experimental postpunk was really open-minded, closer to contemporary music than to the stereotyped dark-goth rock so in vogue in the early 80s. The drum that plays always 'tribal' and 'circular' and the classical-mood in which the keyboards are played (especially the piano) gives to the complex vocal arrangements the right background to become really effective. The atmosphere of the whole album is, as yet said, cold and a bit disturbing, but always surprising and really fascinating and captivating. Due to the band's skills and creativity, 'For All And None' sounds as a real 'modern' album with all the ingredients of the best 80s' music. Reply Notify me 7 Helpful. Witts ' singing is much clearer than on Pindrop, and the mix itself.

The Passage by Oubliette, released 13 July 2018 1. A Pale Innocence 2. The Curse 3. Solitude 4. Elegy 5. Emptiness 6. The Raven's Lullaby 7. Barren 8. The Passage. With a warm sound and contemplative songwriting approach that doesn't sacrifice impact or fury, The Passage won me over quickly and hasn't let go since. Owen W. Owen W Reminiscent of Agalloch and Amiensus, Oubliette comfortably inhabit that space in black metal where it intersects with other genres to make a cohesive sound. Like those bands, acoustic and electric guitar passages are woven seamlessly with the harsher riffing. Throw in the melodic sensibilities of Amiensus.

A genuine classic of the British post punk era. Dark, etheric, mysterious and musically very complicated.

And yet after a few times you can't resist singing the lyrics.

Yes, I agree: one of the most underrated albums of the 80s. This was one of three Mancunian bands along JD, The Fall, Ludus, Blue Orchids, ACR, Durutti Column and a few others. They recorded at first for independent label for Steve Solamar, on Object Music, where they published another masterpiece of the early 80's: the LP "Pindrop"

This is one of the most underrated albums of the 80s' dark-minimal-wave: the music is intense and obscure, but never boring or flat or repeating. If you want some coordinates, the best Cabaret Voltaire's work and the marvellous Names' album are well representing the music of this band, that sometimes could seem a more 'cultural' edition of the best Stranglers. Due to the band's skills and creativity, 'For All And None' sounds as a real 'modern' album with all the ingredients of the best 80s' music.
