Strauss’s controversial opera was first performed in Dresden in 1905, and in this 1948 radio recording from that city she is joined by a team of singers with the Dresden Staatskapelle under the direction of Joseph Keilberth, 1908-68. The cast on this first commercial recording includes Bernd Aldenhoff, 1908-59, Inger Karén, 1908-72, Josef Herrmann, 1903-55 In 1954 Goltz recorded the role with Clemens Krauss conducting, and made her third recording in 1963 under the unjustly ignored Otmar Suitner, 1922-2010, who spent most of his career in the German Democratic Republic. I have read that in Suitner’s recording, Goltz sounds somewhat detached but husbands her voice and produces a memorable performance. Krauss’s cast is the strongest, being based on singers from the Vienna State Opera.

Its precursor ensemble was Die Kurfürstlich-Sächsische und Königlich-Polnische Kapelle (The Electoral Saxon and Royal Polish Orchestra). The orchestra is the musical body of the Staatsoper Dresden (Dresden State Opera)
