Jesse Edwin Davis (September 21, 1944 – June 22, 1988) was a Native American guitarist. He was well regarded as a session artist and solo performer, was a member of the band Taj Mahal and played with musicians such as Eric Clapton, John Lennon, and George Harrison. In 2018, Davis was posthumously inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame at the 18th Annual Native American Music Awards Native American Music Hall of Fame.

Davis lays the boogie down thick in a hip-shaking jam on Pamela Polland’s Tulsa County but his incredible guitar work doesn’t surface until the explosive solo in Washita Love Child. Easily the grooviest jam here, Every Night Is Saturday Night leans hard on classic soul replete with a wailing horn section and catchy, barbed, chorus hooks. Jesse Davis! Jesse Ed Davis. Following his stint as Taj Mahal’s guitar player, Jesse Ed Davis embarked upon his first solo album, which plays more like the soundtrack to a 1971 party as Davis booked a few days’ worth of studio time, stocked the place with alcohol and party favors and invited some friends over to jam while the tape rolled.

This first solo release from session-guitarist extraordinaire Jesse Ed Davis celebrates the ethos of early-'70s album making; namely, renting a studio for a weekend, supplying lots of drugs and alcohol, and then inviting a few dozen of your closest friends over to record. The album itself is filled with cameos by Davis' musician pals: Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, and Gram Parsons among them.

In the early ’70s, Davis released three solo albums, Jesse Davis, Ululu, and Keep Me Comin’ – all now collectors items, with heavyweights like Leon Russell, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, and Gram Parsons returning the favor and accompanying him. The first two albums, recently issued on a single CD by Wounded Bird Records, offer even more evidence of Davis’ incredible versatility. A full-blooded Kiowa Indian, Davis played in country star Conway Twitty’s band in his native Oklahoma before moving to Los Angeles and quickly picking up session work with fellow Oklahomans, backing Gary Lewis.
