Plastic Ono Band was more than John Lennon's kiss-off to the Beatles. It was his demolition of everything the previous decade had stood for, a hard-eyed confrontation with the demons that hounded him and a piercing cry for whatever love remained. It used to get a bit embarrassing in front of George and Paul, 'cause we know each other so well: 'Oh, he's trying to be Elvis ; oh, he's doing this now,' you know. We're a bit supercritical of each other. So, we inhibited each other a lo. There would be no such inhibitions here. Plastic Ono Band was recorded – along with a tandem solo album by Ono – in a manner very much in keeping with the Beatles' troubled Get Back project, over the course of roughly a month beginning in September 1970 at Abbey Road and Ascot Sound Studios.
Like the other Beatles, like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, he was from a cohort who saw no disconnect between artistic adventure and commercial ambition. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is not the bleak record of some descriptions, for there are some beautiful melodies and gently beguiling arrangements. But the stark purity of the songs is always paramount. People say we got it made Don't they know we're so afraid? Isolation We're afraid to be alone everybody got to have a home Isolation. Just a boy and a little girl Trying to change the whole wide world Isolation The world is just a little town Everybody trying to put us down Isolation.
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Now Yoko finally has an album all her own out, and it bodes well for future experiments by the Murk Twins along these lines. For one thing, Yoko has excellent backup this time: one track features an Ornette Coleman quartet, and the rest find John, Ringo and bassist Klaus Voormann working out accompaniments that are by turns as frenzied as Yoko herself and quite restrained. It always sounds thought-out, carefully arranged, appropriate; and with Yoko’s music that’s saying something.
Whatever else it may be, Plastic Ono Band is an inquiry into the stark realities facing an individual living in modern society.
John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer, songwriter, musician, and activist who co-founded The Beatles, the most commercially successful and musically influential band in the history of popular music. He and fellow member Paul McCartney formed a much-celebrated songwriting partnership. Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager.
