Hawkwind is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio.

For early, early, and intense Hawkwind sounds, this is a real treasure for the discerning fan of vintage Hawkwind. Usually audience recordings suffer from bad equipment picking up a good live mix, but this album suffers from the other extreme. There is no flutter or anything, just a poor mix. But text of a festival is some other crazy shizzle. Sourced from BBC recordings (very careful how to word this, as some other guy recorded them off the radio) they capture hawkwind at an unprecedentedly early age, and because hawkwind never played the same twice, we get a low-fi treat

Scary Music Halloween Imagination. Text of Festival: Hawkwind Live, 1970 (Live 70-72).

Essentially the album is in two parts; the first seven tracks coming from their first ever BBC sessions recorded between 1970 and 1971. The second half comprises of part of a recorded gig at Colchester Technical College in February 1971.
