An amazing album! Originally, to me Biosphere's best release was Substrata & in every respect it still remains a classic but Cirque just has that something extra, a real journey into the glacial sound that Biosphere creates, a journey that one takes with the explorer to which it is inspired from.

Cirque - originally released in 2000 - was Biosphere´s first album for the UK label Touch. This new re-issue comes with a 6-track bonus album and new artwork. Mojo (UK): Fourth full album from ambient pioneer. Coming to prominence with 1992's Microgravity - which along with the first couple of Aphex/Polygon Window CDs, defined the genre ambient - Geir Jenssen as Biosphere has made three of the '90s' best albums, culminating with last year's near beatless Substrata.
Cirque collects 11 short Biosphere pieces, each evocative of a photo included in an accompanying booklet. Though the subjects range throughout Europe (from New Year's Eve on London's South Bank to a rocky meadow near Jenssen's native Tromsö, Norway, to rural Hampshire to a mountain on Crete), the music sticks mostly to either soft, textured rhythms - if Jenssen were a drummer, he'd be using his whisks - or deep.
Cirque (2016 Reissue Version).
This album has an average beat per minute of 99 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 64/138 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page.
Biosphere accomplishes this with his organic production and lush keyboard soundscapes. The overall sound of Cirque is cold, dark, atmospheric and clammy. Throughout the album you’ll encounter a rain storm, venture into frightening caves, sit in icy caverns and walk up mountains. Jenssens knack for creating such vivid imagery is in full force, with a solid set of headphones the listener will be able to pick up on the subtle touches that really make Cirque a special listening experience.
