When issued as a single in May 1970, a month after the Beatles' break-up, it became the group's 20th and last number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. It was the final single released by the quartet.
In 2011, Rolling Stone ranked The Long and Winding Road number 90 on their list of 100 greatest Beatles songs of all time. McCartney originally wrote the song at his farm in Scotland, and was inspired by the growing tension among the Beatles. The new album included a later take of The Long and Winding Road, recorded on 31 January. With no strings or other added instrumentation beyond that which was played in the studio at the time, it was closer to the Beatles’s original intention than the 1970 version. This take is redated from 31 Jan based on Mark Lewisohn’s notes on Anthology 3. The take used in the film Let It Be is still dated to 31 Jan. About The Long and Winding Road. In 2003 Paul re-mixed the song and the rest of the album as Let It B. aked removing Spector’s production (check: The Long and Winding Road (Naked Version) ). Unusually, it’s Lennon playing bass on the original recording (instead of McCartney) – possibly because it was only meant to be a quick run-through with Paul on piano, with McCartney planning to overdub the bass afterwards.

A Long and Winding Road is Maureen McGovern's twelfth studio album and was released in 2008 by PS Classics. It is a cover album of songs that were from the 1960s and early 1970s, written by notable songwriters of that era. Inside the album cover includes an essay by Philip Himberg (who is the Producing Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program) that covers Maureen McGovern's making of the album and the growth of the Great American Songbook during the 1960s.
