The emphasis is on Gabby Pahinui and his band and on the interplay of voices and guitars - in addition to his sons, Pahinui's band included two world-class slack key players, Sonny Chillingworth and Leland Isaacs. The music is best when they steer away from the overly sentimental material, which can sometimes confuse - "Hawaiian Love" sounds as if it's going to be maudlin, but resolves as a glorious instrumental, while on the other hand the upbeat "Wahini U'l" gets bogged down with unnecessary strings that detract from its innate loveliness
Philip Kunia Pahinui (Hawaiian pronunciation: ; April 22, 1921 – October 13, 1980) was a slack-key guitarist and singer of Hawaiian music. Born into a struggling family, Gabby was born Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. and later hānaied with his brother and one of his sisters to Philip and Emily Pahinui and raised in the impoverished district of Kaka'ako in Honolulu in the 1920s ("all tin roofs and kinda falling apart")

Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, Vol. "Please retry". This is a classic album for fans of Hawaiian music. I saw Pops once, and only once. But it was an experience. On Maui, I was a teenager, and a new record store was opening in Kaahumanu Center: MJ's Music (long gone now). Gabby was going to play in the afternoon. I was there, leafing through the stacks waiting for it to begin. I recall a skinny young guy with a pony tail standing next to me. He was doing the same as I was, flipping through albums to see what was there. Then a commotion, and things started happening
