Miles and Coltrane first collaborated in 1955, when Davis recruited the tenor saxophonist alongside pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. This "first great quintet" made their Columbia Records debut in 1957. Those early recordings showcased the stunning contrasts between Miles' spacious, melodic lines and Trane's cascading high-energy solos, famously described by the critic Ira Gilter in 1958 as "sheets of sound.

When one considers that Davis' sextet at the time included such giants as tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, altoist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, it is not surprising that fireworks resulted. Still, the power and drive of this intense version of "Ah-Leu-Cha" is a revelation, and the band really swings and stretches out on "Straight, No Chaser," "Fran Dance," "Two Bass Hit," and "Bye Bye Blackbird. Brilliant music by some of the giants.

Miles Davis & John Coltrane: Live in New York - Miles Davis, John Coltrane.

The ensemble includes Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), all of whom had been performing together since the Kind Of Blue album. The Final Tour closes with a rare contemporaneous audio interview with John Coltrane (conducted by Swedish deejay Carl-Erik Lindgren). Do you feel angry?, asks Lindgren. No, I don’t, says Coltrane. I was talking to a fellow the other day, and I told him, the reason I play so many sounds, maybe it sounds angry, I’m trying so many things at one time.
