Complete your Judee Sill collection. Absolutely beautiful and intimate performances on this LP. Her songwriting shines in a way that is sometimes obscured by the full album arrangements and there's a real sense of her personality that comes through in her banter. If you're a Judee Sill fan this is a must.
It's startling to hear Judee Sill speak on Live in London. She's been gone nearly 30 years, and the circumstances of her death- an overdose that may or may not have been accidental- play into her cult as surely as do the circumstances of her life. She had an unsettled upbringing, turned to prostitution to feed her drug habit, and then went to jail, where she experienced a type of epiphany and so began writing songs and living up to her vast musical talent . Sill's three appearances on the BBC were recorded within a year of each other, which meant she was pulling from the same pool of songs. As a result, Live in London is heavily repetitive: of the seventeen tracks (not counting the interview), there are only ten different songs.

What a fine, fine album from Judee Sill. Listening to her warm, almost innocent sounding voice (along with her own guitar or piano accompaniment), on songs like "Jesus Was A Cross Maker" (her most well known song), "Lady-O", "The Lamb Ran Away With The Crown", "There's a Rugged Road", "Enchanted Sky Machine", and (take your pick), it's hard to understand how incredibly hard her life had been for. many years before these recordings. But shedding much of earlier lifestyle, Sill (who died in 1979) began writing some pretty incredible songs, many which she performs in this BBC set from '72-'73. Her folk-style vocals accompanied only by her fairly impressive guitar work and, on some songs, her gospel influenced piano skills, put her in the same league as Laura Nyro, Jackson Browne, and Joni Mitchell, along with other singer-songwriters of the period.
