This first of two 1989 Rounder anthologies spotlighting traditional Cajun music from the mid-'60s began with a great group, The Balfa Freres. This was among the finest and most intense of the founding Cajun bands, characterized by wonderful harmonizing, intense leads and great fiddle backing. Others on this anthology were Austin Pitre & The Evangeline Playboys, a hard-driving, upbeat unit, and the venerable Edius Nacquin, in his 70s when he cut the anthology's final four tracks and still an energetic, distinctive singer. blue highlight denotes track pick. from FRC 111 - The Balfa Brothers & Nathan Abshire: The 1970 NYC Concert (Recordings from the collections of Ray Alden & Dave Spilkia) by The Balfa Brothers & Nathan Abshire. Some assorted clips of the Balfa Brothers, the majority being a live clip at the 1979 Lafayette Tribute to Cajun Music festival from a tape produced by Michael Doucet ( A GREAT cajun fiddler).
