Murder in the Cathedral. Thomas Becket, a London merchant’s son, was a complex person – in his youth he was a normal ebullient young man, stormy and proud, selfish and arrogant, vain, and anxious to please, but in later life, became one of the most pious and devout Archbishops of the 12th century. Despite differences in their status Thomas’s greatest friend was Henry, who was later to become King Henry II of England. They hunted and played chess together, people said the two men ‘had but one heart and one mind’  . Much of the power in the country at that time was enjoyed and exploited by the rich bishops and abbots of the Church. And, whilst the Church swore loyalty to the king, they also insisted that their true allegiance was to God and his earthly representative, the Pope in Rome.

Why was Thomas Becket important to Henry II? Thomas Becket's life and death were remarkable. The son of a wealthy commoner, he rose to become Chancellor, a post given to him by Henry, such was his trust in Becket. In 1162 he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by Henry. He became a strong defender of the Church and the rights of clergymen. This was contrary to the loyalty Henry had expected from Becket. At the time the Church held great wealth and power over monarchs and their people. With the support of the Pope in Rome, Becket represented an even greater power. Canterbury Cathedral. Henry viewed Becket as a nuisance, the turbulent priest, but Becket has been viewed as an example and martyr to religious people and was canonised almost immediately after his murder. Becket has been the subject of debate ever since his death: was he a saint or a troublemaker?
